Achieving Meaningful Use – The Importance of Clinical Decision Support

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) allocates $36 billion in incentives to hospitals and eligible providers that meet the definition of meaningful use of electronic health records (EHRs). Clinical decision support is a key criterion of meeting the definition of meaningful use, according to the draft definition published July 16, 2009 by the Health IT Policy Committee of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. Although EHR systems provide the solid foundation, tools, and framework, implementing and using the technology alone will not enable hospitals and providers to demonstrate meaningful use.
