Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy-A Painful Complication

Neuropathy is a common micro vascular complication affecting nearly 50% of patients with diabetes. Complications from diabetic neuropathy account for 50% to 75% of non traumatic amputations. The total annual cost of diabetic neuropathy and its complications in the United States is estimated to be between $4.6 and $13.7 billion. Pharmacists in all health care settings play an important role in the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy.
Nursing Educational Objectives:

* Describe the epidemiology and etiology of painful diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN).
* Identify the pharmacological treatment options for patients suffering from DPN, to include their mechanisms of action, efficacy, safety, and tolerability profiles.

Pharmacists Educational Objectives:
