When Pain Relief Leads to Pain Medication Abuse-Pharmacists Intervene

This knowledge based program will assist pharmacists in understanding facets of the pain felt by patients, and the justifications patients may give for potentially abusing pain medications. They will discover ways to reveal the benefits of alleviating the pain as indicated by the prescriber. It will also enhance pharmacists' knowledge of available information for those patients under these conditions. The program includes information on elements of pharmacologic treatments, patient counseling, and a question/answer period.
Pharmacists Educational Objectives:

* State the statistics of pain medication abuse occurring in the United States, among various demographic groups.
* Specify the impact of the under treatment of pain and inadequate pain relief.
* Counsel families, including adults and teenagers, about the benefits of managing pain according to prescription indication, as well as the risks of misusing these drugs.
* Identify a number of ways to deter pain medication abuse in the homes of families in the United States.

Pharmacy Technicians Educational Objectives:

* Outline the demographics of pain medication abuse in the United States.
* Identify the dangers associated with non medical use of prescription pain medications.

Nursing Educational Objectives:

* State the statistics of pain medication abuse occurring in the United States, among various demographic groups.
* Specify the impact of the under treatment of pain and inadequate pain relief.
* Counsel families, including adults and teenagers, about the benefits of managing pain according to prescription indication, as well as the risks of misusing these drugs.
